Train Tour at Kilohana Plantation Description
In addition to farming, the Kilohana Plantation, which has been growing fruit since 1864, now offers narrow gauge train rides in wooden cars. The 40-minute ride in an open-air car takes you on a narrated tour of fields of sugar cane, papaya, pineapple, coffee, tropical flowers, and hardwood trees. The train stops to let children feed boars and goats captured on the property and then you have an option: To resume the ride or take a guided nature walk through an abandoned tropical floral farm where the plants and trees grow so thick you can barely see the sky. After a catered picnic lunch you walk through the experimental fruit orchards to sample acerola cherries, lychee nuts, longan, and anything else in season.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Given the mosquitoes and the botany talks, toddlers will better enjoy the 40-minute train ride and pet feeding and should skip the hike and orchard visit.
School-Age Kids: Everything about this half day is fun — from the train ride to the walk — but your kids will probably like sampling exotic fruits right off the trees the best!
Planning Notes
- Wear walking shoes. If you chose to go on the hike.
- Long sleeves are a good idea. The mosquitoes are something fierce — though mosquito repellant is provided it doesn't always work.
- Consider a luau. There's lots to do at Kilohana in addition to the train ride and hike, including clay making, a nighttime luau, and a visit to the boutique shops now occupying the former plantation mansion.
