Reef Guides Snorkel Tour - Malama Ke Kai Description
Malama Ke Kai means "care for the ocean" and part of the time your family spends with the biologists, divers, and expert guides at this eco-friendly snorkeling operation involves learning how to protect the coral reefs. A slide show of the fish (racoon butterfly fish, wrasses, hawkfish, spotted boxfish, and more) and other marine life (anemone, sea cucumbers, eels, and maybe even a shark) you'll be looking for kicks off the adventure, after which you suit up and head to the ocean. This half day ends with lunch and a Q-and-A session with biologists.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Though children as young as 4 can enjoy this snorkeling adventure (the guides say they sit atop the foam flotation board that the other snorkelers can hold onto), it is best suited for children ages 8 and older.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids who like turtles will gobble up the .65 cent solid chocolate turtles.
Planning Notes
- Wear biodegradable sunscreen.Malama Ke Kai will tell you that human pollution is jeopardizing the ocean's marine life and unabsorbed sunscreen that slicks off in the water is hurting the coral reef.
- Wear a swimsuit and bring a towel. There's no comfortable place to change once you get, there so wear your swimsuit under your clothes. Wet suits are provided but towels are not.
