Poipu Beach Description
Poipu is an expensive place to stay or eat, but the picture-perfect golden sand beaches here, like all of Hawaii's shoreline, are free and open to the public. The beach by the Kiahuna Plantation Resort is a particularly nice and popular stretch, with its crystal clear water, breaking waves, and palm trees for shade. Poipu Beach is an idyllic spot for a family to spend the afternoon.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: The waves can get so high here that you might want to go to Lydgate State Park, which has a protective rock-wall cove, with kids this age.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will want to ride the waves, sun, and stroll the shoreline to people watch the myriad characters who loll on the beach.
Planning Notes
- Go before you go. Though there are public restrooms at this beach, they are very primitive.
- Bring your own boogie board. Surfing the waves is A-1 fun but there's no place to rent a board on the beach.
- Go shopping. The popular albeit pricey Poipu Shopping Village, has a great store for wee ones called Sand Kids and free hula dance performances from 5-6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is located just across the highway from the beach.
