Na 'Aina Kai Botanical Garden, Sculpture Park, and Hardwood Plantation Description

This 240 acre nonprofit botanical garden offers various tours lasting 90 minutes to five hours, depending on the interest of the group and the loquacity of the guides. The Under the Rainbow Children's Garden tour is an ideal family activity: Your kids will discover a 1-acre maze made up of more than 2,000 mock orange plants; taste mountain apples (which have a pear-like flavor and consistency); feed koi and Hawaiian moor hens; swing from the aerial roots of a banyan tree; hug a eucalyptus; and play in the fabulous children's playground, which has a wading pool with a tiled Jack-in-the-Beanstalk sculpture and fountain in the middle.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Even toddlers and preschoolers enjoy the Children's Garden tour. Though they may not be interested in the botanical details, they will love the metal sculptures throughout the garden and all of the hands-on activities.

School-Age Kids: There's a tether ball court, wooden climbing structures, a wooden train, and a hippo to scale in addition to the wading pool in the Under the Rainbow Playground.

Pre-Teens & Teens: May want to take the 2.5 Ka Waimakai Beach Walk, which goes through forested land, over streams and bridges, and culminates in a visit to the formal gardens.

Planning Notes

  • Wear a bathing suit under your clothes. So you can splash around in the wading pool at the end. A towel is a good idea, too!
  • Bring a light jacket. The weather can be unpredictable.
  • Several other tours available. Read the descriptions of each online.
