Hanalei Beach Description
First gaining national attention when filmed in the Hollywood classic, "South Pacific," in 1958, Hanalei Bay Beach has been getting a lot of buzz lately because Dr. Stephen Leatherman (also known as "Dr. Beach") named it America's No. 1 beach for 2009. After a long and scenic drive along Kauai's north shore the reward is a gorgeous two-mile stretch of beach with fine white sand, sapphire blue water, and palm trees. Locals come here to enjoy some of the best surfing on the island and also to jump off the Hanalei Pier, which is heart achingly beautiful with its backdrop of waterfalls and emerald mountains.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: The waves here are not as calm as they are at more protected beaches. If you're traveling with little ones, consider Ludgate State Beach instead.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Hands down, the beach to come to for the older set. Great boogie boarding, surfing, and people watching. You might consider splurging on a surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, or boating lesson for this age group as well.
Planning Notes
- Have a shave ice. When you're in Hanalei to be a beach bum, enjoy the perfect cap to a long day of sun and water.
- Go on Tuesday. If you spend the morning at the beach, you can head to the Waipa Farmer's Market to stock up on local fruits, vegetables, and baked goods in the afternoon.
- Bring a picnic. There are tables and shady grassy areas. You can also eat in Hanalei but most of the restaurants cater to tourists and tend to be pretty expensive.
