Lydgate State Park Description
With a rock wall sheltering part of the sea from the crashing waves, the Kamalani Playground across the street, lifeguards on duty and ample free parking, Ludgate State Park is one of the best beaches on Kauai for young families. The two "sheltered" coves have just enough waves and are great for first-time snorkelers and the beach itself has plenty of shade trees and picnic tables. The only downside is that it's such a popular spot with locals and tourists that you won't be having an intimate family experience.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: You'll see lots of little ones on this beach, which is fabulous for the non-walking set.
School-Age Kids: Though your youngster may be a bit fearful, the guides are very attentive and take good care of them. If that's not enough, there are places after tunnel one and tunnel two where you can get out of the water. Children 9 and younger must wear a lifejacket (these are provided or bring your own).
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids can swim or surf the waves in the part of the water that is not hemmed in with large rocks. Lifeguards ask that you check in with them about conditions first.
Planning Notes
- BYOG. Bring your own gear as there is no outfitter on the beach to provide snorkel equipment or boogie boards.
- Go before you go. The restrooms are functional but ... pretty grim.
