Kauai Backcountry Tubing Adventures Description

On this awesome family-friendly activity which is unique to Kauai, you float, bump, and richocet down 2.5 miles of old sugar cane irrigation ditches (think flumes) in an inner tube with your tush and feet in the water. A bumpy ride in a Pinzgauer all-terrain military vehicle on privately owned land brings you to the intake where you splash onto your tube. Much of the tubing is actually done through five dark drippy tunnels of varying lengths. After the ride, your group will enjoy a picnic lunch next to a swimming hole. This totally tubular experience is definitely an adventure, but a mild one: the tubes only float at about 2-3 miles per hour.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Kids must be at least 43-inches tall.

School-Age Kids: Though your youngster may be a bit fearful, the guides are very attentive and take good care of them. If that's not enough, there are places after tunnel one and tunnel two where you can get out of the water. Children 9 and younger must wear a lifejacket (these are provided or bring your own).

Pre-Teens & Teens: This isn't a thrill ride but it's such an unusual experience that teens like it as much as younger kids.

Planning Notes

  • Wear a bathing suit and water shoes and bring a towel. Water shoes are available for $3 to rent. Sandals are fine as long as they have straps (no flipflops or you'll lose them). Your feet get wet. No towels are provided so you need to bring your own.
  • Expect mosquitoes. You can buy bug spray at the warehouse before the tour leaves.
  • Smile, you're on aquatic camera. To capture the moment you'll need a waterproof camera or video recorder.
  • Leave behind your pocket change. Anything you have in your pockets may fall out so you'll want to empty them before you go.
  • Book ahead. Mountain tubing adventures get sold out up to two weeks in advance in the summer.
