Hilo's Farmers Market Description
Bustling at 7 a.m. (the motto here is the market is open "from dawn til it's gone"), this open-air fruit and vegetable market is a cultural experience not to be missed. Vendors from countries all over the world sell fruits and vegetables you've never seen before, like lychee nuts, dragon eye fruit (logan in Chinese), and miracle fruit. There's also papayas, mangoes, maui onions, island honey, and more. Here you can grab some groceries or head to the beach across the street with a snack of organic cherry tomatoes, bear claws and other baked goods, chicken pesto sandwiches, or a Thai rice delicacy wrapped in taro leaves.
Kid Tips
Babies: This market is elbow-room only. Ditch the stroller and carry the kid.
School-Age Kids: Kids will love trying the miracle fruit, a small red berry that makes the next thing you eat — even lemon or sour pineapple — taste sweet.
Planning Notes
- Saturday morning is THE time to go. The market is held year round every Wednesday and Saturday, but the Saturday market is the bigger one.
- Bring cash. That's the only way to pay.
- Go early. For the best selection of fruits and danishes.
