Kaimu Black Sand Beach Description
The newest beach in the world and one that is still forming daily: Kaimu Black Sand Beach dates only to March 2008. Walk 3/4 of a mile walk over a ropey black lava rock called "pa hoe hoe" in Hawaiian and you arrive at a spectacular place where crashing waves hit the night black sand made of ground lava rock. Auntie Maile, who lives nearby, planted the first coconut trees here to provide wind breaks and shade and many others followed her example so there are now more than 100 palms growing in the black sand. Your family can swim, throw rocks in the water, see the lava coming off Kilauea, and enjoy the sounds and smell of the sea.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Given the walk and the proximity to the lava flow, this beach is best for children 7 and older
Planning Notes
- Expect a trek. This beach has no easy access though the hike over lava walk is worth doing in and of itself. Plan accordingly by wearing sensible shoes and bringing water with you.
- Check the eruption update. It's always a good idea to find out where and how much lava is flowing before you get too close to it. Call the eruption hotline at: 808-961-8063.
- Try the Kalapana Village Café. The closest place to eat to this beach, they offer kid-friendly food at reasonable prices.
