Harold H. Higashihara Park Description
On a hillside surrounded by monkeypod and palm trees is one of the nicest public parks on the Big Island. The Kamakana Playground here is truly spectacular. It has chess tables built right into the rock, a horseshoe ring toss, elaborately carved wooden play structures, and a double-hulled giant canoe to climb. Your kids can scale a lifesized whale, ride a dizzifying twirling machine, clamber to the top of wooden turrets, scamper across a drawbridge, and "ride" the Kona Sugar Co. 1897 model train! On a clear day you can see right down to the ocean. There's no better playground in Hawaii.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: There's a special area of the playground for toddlers that has a seesaw, slides, choo choo, and pint-sized play structures (plus benches for mom and dad to sit on).
School-Age Kids: Don't miss the wooden replica of a Polynesian sailing ship that has a tunnel to crawl through and a hull to scale up.
Pre-Teens & Teens: A perfect activity for the pimply set, as long as they feel comfortable in the water. Teens will be intrigued to know that mantas are closely related to sharks with skeletons made of cartilage not bone.
Planning Notes
- Bring a racket or a ball. There are tennis courts, basketball courts, and even a baseball diamond at this park.
- Bring a picnic. Covered picnic tables make this a great place for an outdoor lunch.
