Kona Beach Boys Shack Description
Smell the salty water, wonder at the billowing sails of paragliders in the distance, and hear the joyful shouts of Japanese, Australian, French, Mainland, and Hawaiian visitors at Kailua Pier right near downtown Kona, a placid cove where families can swim, snorkel, and enjoy the Big Island's biggest trend: stand-up paddleboarding. Kona Boys Beach Shack, just past King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel, is a laid back outfitter that offers excellent gear, affordable prices, and the best lessons for beginning paddleboarders anywhere on the Big Island.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Those 6 and older can take 1.5 hour stand-up paddleboard lessons.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Will want to go on the guided visit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and see the lava from Kilauea creating great plumes of white smoke as it dumps into the ocean.
Planning Notes
- Call ahead to check ocean conditions and reserve a lesson spot. If you want instruction in stand-up paddleboarding (a sport that children seem to take to more easily than grown-ups), it's a good idea to call ahead. The shack has a small staff and though reservations are not required, they are recommended.
- Slather on the sunscreen. There's no shade at this pier.
- Rent by the hour or the day. If it's not crowded, you'll get a generous hour to enjoy a paddleboard ($25 an hour), and you can also rent snorkel gear ($5 an hour or $10 for the day), boogie boards ($5 an hour or $10 a day), and surf boards ($10 an hour or $25 a day).
Just the Facts
Hours: There is access to the pier 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Kona Beach Boys Shack is open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Fees: More than $40.
Recommended Time: 2 - 4 hours
