Hawaii Forest & Trail Description

This outfitter offers guided trips with knowledgable well-educated guides to Volcanoes National Park, birdwatching sites, hidden waterfalls, and more. Join other travelers in a 12-seater van as you tour the Big Island countryside and learn about the flora and fauna. Their best family-friendly outing is to the Kohala waterfalls in North Kohala where a 1.5 mile hike takes you over three bridges, past terraced taro plants and irrigation flumes to spectacular cascading water. Swimming is enouraged.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: These tours, because of the long driving times, are best for kids who can self-occupy for several hours in transit.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Will want to go on the guided visit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and see the lava from Kilauea creating great plumes of white smoke as it dumps into the ocean.

Planning Notes

  • Call ahead to find out what to bring. Each tour is different though you can count on needing sunscreen and a light jacket (no matter how hot it is where you start). For the Kohala waterfall tour you'll also need walking shoes, a bathing suit, and sun hat. Walking sticks, towels, and rain gear provided.
  • Bring snacks. Though a box lunch is served on the tours, your kids will get peckish in the van. Since the Big Island is, well, quite big, expect long travel times.
  • Arrange for drop-off and pick-up. The van can pick your family up close to where you're staying if you make advanced arrangements.
