Akatsuka Orchid Gardens Description
With the largest collection of tropical flowers and orchids on the Big Island and a gift shop full of quirky and fun souvenirs (like flip flops that you can use to mop the floor and tiny claymation orchid magnets), this orchid garden is a perfect place to stop when visiting Volcanoes National Park. Your family can linger as long as you like, walking between the rows of orchids, anthuriums, and other flowers, and sampling a nosegay of exotic botanicals (one smells like Lemon Pledge, another like a giant purple gumball).
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Put a free flower in your wee one's curls — there's a bowl of freshly cut petals (and free bobby pins) by the entrance.
Planning Notes
- Use the restrooms. The restrooms here are clean and well-maintained, a far cry from what you'll be experiencing in the park!
- Read the signage (or ask) if you want to ship an orchid home. Different states on the mainland have different requirements and some — like Arizona — won't let you import flowers from Hawaii without special certification.
