Hapuna Beach State Park Description

One of the few white sand beaches on the Big Island and one of the best beaches in the world, Hapuna Beach State Park offers great boogie boarding, body surfing, sand-castle making, and snorkeling. With a sand bar that stretches half a mile, plenty of shade trees on the way down to the beach, a place to rent beach apparel for affordable prices, and a great snack bar, this beach is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: On the north side of the sandbar there is a small cove perfect for this age group.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Boogie boarding is the thing to do for preteens and teenagers.

Planning Notes

  • Try the fish tacos at Paradise Grill. The snack shack, which is right by the beach, is famous for them. You can also get cold drinks, smoothies, and burgers and fries. Usually open daily 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Oahu-born owner Kaimi Tano says they close early if business is slow.
  • Rent a boogie board. Next door to the grill is a beach rental place where you can get beach chairs, boogie boards, fins, snorkels, and umbrellas for only $10 all day. Make sure you get them back by 4 p.m. or you'll have to pay a $20 fee.
  • Check with the lifeguards about conditions. Though this beach is a wonderful place to play, the lifeguards caution that the surf can be hazardous and unpredictable. They are happy to give pointers about how to ride the waves without getting hurt.
  • Consider bringing a picnic. There are plenty of shaded cement picnic tables covered by green metal roofs on the way down to the beach.
  • Don't bring the pooch. No animals are allowed on the beach.
