River Street Marketplace Description
A covered, open-air market filled with dozens of stalls, the River Street Marketplace is where to go for Savannah memorabilia. Here you'll find Irish music and Celtic jewelry (made by local artisans proud of their Irish heritage), cookbooks of Southern cuisine, paintings by local artists, and every kind of trinket and T-shirt imaginable. Your kids will love wandering the stalls and also watching the local artists at work on their paintings in the courtyard.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: After meandering through the market, you can check out the dock and the boats by the water. Tell your toddler to look only with her eyes, as some of the artwork is breakable.
School-Age Kids: Your school-aged kid will like the colorful wares for sale, and may also want to watch the artists at work (you will too).
Planning Notes
- Bring cash. For some vendors that's the only way to pay.
- Wear layers. Savannah weather is unpredictable and you'll want to have both a light jacket and a sun hat. Though the market is covered, it's open-air.
- Check for cool events. There are festivals, concerts, and other performances on River Street. Check http://www.riverstreetsavannah.com/ to find out what's happening while you're here.

Reviews of River Street Marketplace
Not the best for kids
By shortmama75 March 30, 2010
What we loved:
Great Sand Box
What we didn't love:
Not Stroller Friendly
We crossed the river on the ferry and spent an afternoon here. I visited with a 1-year-old and three-year-old and they both loved the sandbox it has a wooden boat in the middle. The cobblestone streets and bumpy sidewalks are hard to maneuver with a stroller so its good to have one with large tires. There is a kids toy store at the Hyatt that we went to a couple of times. I didnt find a kid-friendly restaurant but there is an ice cream place on the corner near the Hyatt. There is also a visitor center a couple of doors down from the toy store. Its mostly a street with gift shops and a few restaurants. Its basically a place for tourists to spend money. Ellis Square is a much better area for kids. Read More
