Captain Mike's Dolphin Tours Description
Bottle-nosed dolphins abound in the Georgia waters, and they're so friendly they may even swim right up to Captain Mike's bright yellow canvas-roof boat. These tours, which leave from the Lazaretto Creek Marina and are surprisingly affordable, last about an hour and a half, depending on where the dolphins are diving. The dolphins will charm and fascinate your family, and as you look for them you also get a waterside view of Fort Pulaski and the Tybee Lighthouse. This is a family-friendly activity that everyone will love.
Kid Tips
Babies: Lots of babies come on the tour (ages 2 and under are free). The rocking of the boat, the fresh air, and the sound of the engine lulls them to sleep.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Preschoolers squeal with excitement when they see live dolphins, even if it's just the tip of a fin. If your child is prone to motion sickness, he might get a little woozy on the boat (but the rocking isn't too bad and the management has cold cloths, which help).
School-Age Kids: The whole tour is narrated, with cool information about the bottle-nosed dolphins. (Did you know half their brain sleeps while the other half stays awake? Or that for the first month of a baby's life, neither the baby dolphin nor the mom sleeps at all?) This tour is very popular with school groups.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Fresh air, friendly dolphins, and gorgeous vistas go over well with the iPod set.
Planning Notes
- Reservations recommended. Only 49 people can go on a boat so reservations are recommended, particularly in the summer but also in the off season. Call for reservations and use your credit card to hold your spot (though you can pay cash when you get there if you prefer).
- The weather's fickle. It might even rain while you're on the tour (two-thirds of the boat is covered, so don't worry) and it will likely be cooler on the water than on shore, so wear layers and bring a light jacket.
