Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Description

This enormous 19th-century cathedral inspires awe in everyone, including children. The soaring spires, elaborate stained-glass windows, statues, and endless gold-leaf make this cathedral seem as much like a museum as a place of worship.

Kid Tips

Babies: Babies will be naturally drawn to the awesome height and quiet of the cathedral. They'll also like looking at the lit candles in the back left-hand corner.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Toddlers will enjoy sitting on the oak pews (all the material for making them was from local live oaks) and looking at the stained- glass windows.

School-Age Kids: Even if your family is not religious, school-aged kids will be struck by the vastness, beauty, and quiet of the cathedral. After your visit, go to the fountain in Lafayette Square and have them look for the dragon birds on the fountain, and the toads in the water.

Pre-Teens & Teens: You may end up in an interesting philosophical debate with your teen about why there is someone asking for money outside the doors of the most beautiful church in Savannah.

Planning Notes

  • Go to Lafayette Square. Spend some time enjoying this beautiful park after you visit the cathedral. It's a great place for running around and has a three-tiered water fountain.
  • Whisper. Tell your kids beforehand that you are entering a special place and that you need to be quiet and respectful. Kids are welcome but screaming is not.
  • Bring your camera. It's OK to take photographs, and you'll want to.
