Telfair Art Museum Description

There is an unexpectedly rich collection of art in the Telfair Art Museum, and many of the pictures will impress your children. Walk through the high-ceilinged museum slowly in order to really see their stellar permanent collection. Of special interest to kids are the paintings housed in the big, open rotunda: "The Parable," a triptych by Cesare Laurenti that shows youngsters ascending life; and "The Black Prince at Cr‚cy" by Julian Story, which depicts a scene from the Hundred Years' War. Both are profound.

Kid Tips

Babies: A kid-friendly museum, but there's nothing much for babies here.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Of course the Jepson Center's ArtZeum is a better choice, but toddlers and preschoolers will also enjoy figuring out the stories in the paintings.

School-Age Kids: Look at the paintings with your kids or ask someone on the museum staff to explain. The dead horses in the "Black Prince at Cr‚cy," as well as the fallen white prince (who is blind), will fascinate your school-aged child.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Artsy teens, and moody ones, will enjoy all of the museum. Free docent-led tours are also available for your budding historian.

Planning Notes

  • No food allowed. It's strictly food-free in the museum, but there's a nice, bright café with gorgeous picture windows and a nice kids' menu if anyone's having a blood sugar meltdown.
  • Part of a trio. There are three museums in the same complex: the Jepson Center, the Telfair Art Museum, and the Owens-Thomas House (which is a bit too stodgy for kids). If you're with older kids or sight-seeing savvy types, consider buying a combo ticket to get into all three.
  • Bring your AAA card. Members get a discount.
  • Bring a sweater. It's hot in Savannah but many indoor venues, including this museum, are cold because of the air conditioning.
