Stone Mountain Park Description

Stone Mountain is a "monadnock," a mountain that's one big, round rock. Kids like scrambling up the 1.3-mile trail that rises 800 feet to the summit. The Skyride, a Swiss-style aerial tram that takes you to the top (with a view of the giant relief carving of Confederate heroes) is also a hit. A small Southern-themed park has sprung up around the rock, with a reproduction 1870s town, train and riverboat rides, kid's playground, and shows. Plunge into this, or just hike around. The people watching's fun, too.

Kid Tips

Babies: Bring a back carrier for the lovely and doable half-hour hike to the top.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The Barn is an indoor children's museum-style playground aimed at ages 5-12, but interesting to the toddler set too. The train ride will be fun for train-crazy preschoolers, but is a little on the long side.

School-Age Kids: Lots of active play for this age group, including a playground, giant tree houses, and a ropes-and-climbing attraction. The 4-D movie/ride will be a hit.

Pre-Teens & Teens: The Duck, an amphibious vehicle ride that splashes into the lake at the end, is best for this age.

Planning Notes

  • Picnic if it's not too hot. If it is, cool off at one of the restaurants serving authentic Southern fare.
  • Pick your activities. Most of the many activities can be done a la carte, and there are plenty of things to see for free (with parking admission).
  • Snow in Georgia? Starting in the winter of 2007-08, Coca-Cola is going to cover the top with snow machines to provide sledding, snowman-building, and snowball fights.
