Atlanta Botanical Garden Description

If you only have time to do one thing when you're here, go to the Botanical Garden. There's a separate children's garden with interactive educational activities (learn about the lifecycle of a butterfly by going through a caterpillar tunnel), water play, a beehive, and lots of space to play, climb, run, and shout. The rest of the garden will intrigue the whole family. Don't miss the Japanese Garden or the indoor conservatory, which has a tropical rotunda (home to quail, frogs, and birds) as well as a Desert House filled with plants from Madagascar and elsewhere.

Kid Tips

Babies: A perfect place to bring a baby in arms, as the waterfalls and sculptures, along with the blooming flowers and interesting animals, will keep baby and grown-up intrigued.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Start at the Children's Garden, where there are slides, a dragon, a pretend farm (with animal sculptures to climb), and gnomes in a cave cascading with water.

School-Age Kids: Every part of this gorgeous garden is good for school-aged kids. Don't miss looking for the tree frogs or spending a few moments enjoying the Japanese Gardens.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Botanical Garden sounds so boring, but it's anything but. There's so much to do and see even your older one won't complain. Check out the rare tree frogs in the tropical rotunda, but skip the Children's Garden.

Planning Notes

  • Enjoy Piedmont Park as well. The Botanical Garden is in Piedmont Park, which is a lovely urban park with play structures, paths, and a paved biking/running/skating trail.
  • Bring bug spray. Expect mosquitoes if you take advantage of their evening hours.
  • Bring a bathing suit. The water play area is a great place to cool off, but your kid will get wet, wet, wet. So bring a bathing suit or a change of clothes.
  • Go on a weekday. The garden is enormous, but the Children's Garden can get crowded and is best enjoyed during off hours.
  • Ask about special kids' activities. There are a lot of kid-friendly programs scheduled (like cooking with bugs!) and you can print out kid itineraries online at http://www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org/site/kids/fun_activities.
