Catacombs of Paris Description
A stomach-dropping descent down a spiral staircase, winding tunnels, thousands of bones lining the walls, a dark and dank interior … this is the creepy world that awaits you when you visit the Paris catacombs, the city's municipal ossuary (it's official name is l'Ossuaire Municipal ). The self-guided underground tour lasts about an hour as you walk at your own pace along this mass gravesite. This gruesome attraction, which entices thousands of visitors a year, is as bone-chilling as it is fascinating — a perfect activity for families who aren't faint of heart.
Kid Tips
Babies: You can't take a stroller on the twisty spiral staircases.
School-Age Kids: Admission is free for those younger than 14.
Pre-Teens & Teens: The catacombs are a must-do for this age group as long as yours won't have nightmares about seeing the skulls and bones of the some 6 million Parisians buried here.
Planning Notes
- Wear sturdy shoes. You walk up and down two narrow staircases (one 9-year-old counted 83 steps on the ascent) and along the underground tunnels.
- Bring a jacket. Even when it's hot summer above ground, the catacombs are chilly.
- Not for small children. This is not a baby or toddler-friendly activity, but something you will want to do with older children.
- Expect long lines. Only 200 people are allowed in the catacombs at one time, which means that lines can be long and slow-moving. As with many of the most popular places in Paris, it's best to get to the catacombs right when they open.
