Marionnettes du Champs de Mars Description

A local secret that most American children don't experience but that may be the most memorable thing your family does in Paris. An unpretentious green building in view of the Eiffel Tower houses an enchanting puppet theater with such colorful and animated shows you'll enjoy every minute. The authentic handmade 19th-century puppets are magnificently clothed in ruffles, golden-buttoned waitcoats and silks. In the French tradition, a bell rings outside before the curtain rises: A sound that warms every French child's heart. Even if you don't understand a word of French, these shows are fantastique.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: The seats are just right for small folk and the antics of Guignol will amaze and delight your toddlers but the theater is very dark, which can frighten some children.

School-Age Kids: Kids will be awed by the colorful costumes and the exquisitely carved and expressive faces of the puppets and charmed by the silly storyline.

Planning Notes

  • Bring cash. That's the only way to pay and if you want to treat your kids to ice cream and snacks sold at intermission, you'll need cash for that as well.
  • Follow the sound of the bell. The theater is tricky to find — it is not far from the playgrounds but it's on the opposite side (east side if you're facing the Eiffel Tower) and not well marked. Ask someone who looks local and has children to point you in the right direction or listen for the sound of the bell (if you miss the first performance you can get tickets the second one).
  • Other puppet theaters in Paris. There are also puppet shows at the Jardin du Luxemburg and the Jardin d'Acclimation if these locations are more convenient.
