Champs de Mars Description

Locals and tourists all love the Champs de Mars, the expanse of park outside the Eiffel Tower, that was once used as a drill ground for the nearby Ecole Militaire. Lovers stroll arm-in-arm, children squeal and squabble at the playgrounds which have climbing webs, sandboxes, swings, and even a toddler-only section. There's also has a delightful puppet theater, basketball courts, large swaths of green to play soccer or frisbee, little wooded areas for kids to explore, and an old-fashioned hand-cranked carousel (get a wooden stick and try to catch the metal rings as you go by).

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Young children will want to ride the lovely, old-fashioned handpainted hand cranked carousel. The stick and ring game is a bit frustrating for toddlers but satisfyingly challenging for kids a little older.

School-Age Kids: There is all sorts of impromptu fun on the weekends and school holidays at the Champs de Mars, including pony rides and go-karts.

Pre-Teens & Teens: May be embarrassed by the shall-we-say French displays of affection that one finds on many benches in the Champs de Mars, especially at sunset.

Planning Notes

  • Have a picnic. You can lounge on the grass and enjoy a picnic or grab a bite from the friendly Italian vendor who has a small cafe adjacent to the carousel.
  • Bring sand toys. There's lots of digging to do in the playground but you need to bring your own plastic shovel and bucket.
  • Check out the Mur Pour La Paix. If you're in tourist mode, there's a glass peace wall that was built in 2000 with the word for peace in 32 languages at the far end of the Champs de Mars.
