Jungle Island Description

Formerly known as "Parrot Jungle," the venue's renovation and shift to a more expansive jungle theme makes this more an aviary and zoo rather than the oddball attraction it's long been known for (gone are the roller-skating cockatoos and poker-playing parrots). But the new shows are entertaining for kids, especially when birds fly overhead in the Parrot Bowl, or when they see a 20-foot long crocodile in the Serpentarium. Be sure to do the two standbys kids always loved in Parrot Jungle: hand-feeding the parrots and holding them for a picture.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: The noise of the caged birds on the walking paths could scare them, but most love the opportunities to interact with animals.

School-Age Kids: They'll thrill to see (and touch) the animals.

Pre-Teens & Teens: They may prefer to spend more time at the authentic Everglades Habitat recreation and the bird aviaries.

Planning Notes

  • Bargain hunt first. Look for discount admission coupons online and in guidebooks.
  • Check it out online. Review the site's website with your kids before you go, so they can learn about the specific animals they'll see in the park. Favorites include Boomer the macaw and twin orangutan babies, Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Pie.
  • Prepare for the weather. If it rains you can stay dry moving from one attraction to another via the park's covered walkways. Also, wear a hat and lots of sunscreen, reapplying the latter often, even in winter.
  • Polly wants lots of crackers. Bring quarters to pay to feed the birds.
