Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center Description

If you don't have the time to hit the Everglades, or you've got kids too young to appreciate such an extensive outing, get a small slice of natural Florida on this trip. Families with young children should start in the hands-on exhibit room, where they can see fish tanks and touch live shellfish and loads of shells, sponges and seeds. Kids of all ages can stroll (you can request a free guide) on the various trails out back (some more stroller-friendly than others). Though offered only on occasional weekends, the center sponsors a spectacular "Seagrass Adventure," where, for an extra fee, families with kids 5 and older spend a few hours wading in the water with a naturalist, scooping up shrimp, starfish, and sea urchins to examine.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: They'll love the exhibit room, the butterfly garden and short trail out back.

School-Age Kids: They'll enjoy a quick stop in the exhibit room but will really rave about the outdoor nature trails.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Nature lovers will enjoy walking to the overlook.

Planning Notes

  • Call head. If you’re interested in the Seagrass Adventure, call in advance to see when they’re scheduled. If you can come with another family, the amenable center will arrange an outing especially for you.
  • Bring bug spray! Since the trails weave through forested areas, there are innumerable mosquitoes -- especially in summer or after rain.
  • Take a hike. If you can spare the time and have kids who are hikers (or are in strollers), consider the 3-mile trail to the boardwalk’s end, which dead-ends at a spectacular ocean view.
