Fairchild Tropical Gardens Description
Most kids might not appreciate the hundreds of palm tree varieties or internationally renowned cycad specimens, but they will delight in running around (yes, they let kids run, lay on the grass, and even touch the flowers) at this 83-acre garden. Walk through the teeming butterfly garden, the shady rainforest, and the tropical-fruit-tree pavilion, then catch the open-air tram on its second stop (by the caf) for a narrated swing through the rest of the grounds. Be sure to eat at the outdoor caf, which offers delicious salads, sandwiches, and desserts.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Lots of room to run and lots of butterflies, ducks, iguanas and flowers to see.
School-Age Kids: If you don't make them walk the whole garden, or point out each of the thousands of species they pass, they'll enjoy the soothing setting.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Teens who love flora will want to stop and read the description plaques; others will enjoy the relaxing ambiance.
Planning Notes
- Bring an umbrella. Try to go in the morning, since it's not only cooler, it's less likely to rain.
- Plan to eat here. The outdoor café features top-notch food, not to mention an enchanting garden view.
- Bring binoculars. If you go in the morning they'll help you spot the many birds waking up in the trees.
