Vizcaya Description
It's odd to find a 16th-century Italian villa in South Florida, but that's what mogul James Deering was aiming for when he created his lavish winter residence in the early twentieth century. Although kids won't care a whit about the authentic medieval Moorish tapestry or opulent European antiques, they'll be open-mouthed by the home's size, the expansive oceanfront courtyard and the beautiful gardens outside. Unless you've got an older child, skip the guided 45-minute tour and peek into the four dozen downstairs rooms yourself.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Older kids will get a kick out of the home's primitive switchboard, elevators, and other high-tech marvels of the day.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Kids who appreciate beautiful, old things will enjoy taking the guided tour.
Planning Notes
- Make this part of a day. This is right near the Museum of Science, so seeing them together might make sense.
- Bring your appetite. Plan for a snack, if not a meal, in the café overlooking the swimming pool. They serve very good salads and sandwiches.
