Key West Lighthouse Museum Description
When kids see this piece of Florida history, the first thing they're desperate to ask is, "Can I please, please climb to the top?" The answer is yes, and scaling the 88 circular steps to a deck offering a view of the whole island is a treat for all but the most heights-phobic. If you can, make this your first stop to get the lay of the land below. Older kids should take time to ramble through the exhibit in the cottage keeper's house, featuring the lives of early keepers (one family of six was swept out to sea with an earlier lighthouse in the 1846 hurricane).
Kid Tips
Babies: It's best if you and your spouse take turns staying with the baby on the pretty grounds below (and waving to older kids at the top).
School-Age Kids: This age group will most likely enjoy climbing the lighthouse (and counting the stairs!), then waving at folks on the ground. It will be a trip highlight.
Pre-Teens & Teens: They'll enjoy looking out below to spot places they've already seen (or want to see). History buffs will enjoy the exhibit.
Planning Notes
- Sneakers are best. It's tough to make the climb in flip-flops or flimsy sandals.
- Bring your camera. It's tempting to leave it in the car before you make the climb, but the view from the top is worth snapping.
