Double Decker Bus Ride Description

Most tourists opt for expensive sightseeing buses, but we recommend something else: take your family on a bona fide double decker bus ride and enjoy London with the locals. There are so many buses in London that you can take one almost anywhere — but two of the best are the No. 15 and the No. 23, taking you past many main London landmarks and attractions, including Oxford Street (where there's great shopping), Picadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square (look for the lions), and through the outskirts of Covent Garden, past St Paul's Cathedral, finishing at the Tower of London.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Children under 11 ride the bus for free!

Pre-Teens & Teens: There's something thrilling about these buses, which are so much bigger than most in the United States. This affordable but simple activity may be the highlight of your trip.

Planning Notes

  • Consider buying a day pass. Available by machine at the bus stops or at the kiosks nearby. A day pass costs less than $6 and allows you to get on and off at your leisure as many times as you wish.
  • Sit upstairs in the front seats. There are huge bay windows at the very front of the bus (though any seat on the second floor gives you a wonderful view), perfect for sight seeing.
  • Bring a snack. No one minds if you eat on the bus and this way you can stay on for longer.
  • Bring a map. You don't want to make the mistake of riding a local bus past all the tourist areas to a less desirable part of town.
