Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station Description

Visiting Platform 9 3/4, which is where Harry Potter takes his first intentional step into the magical world, is like stepping into the wonder of book all over again. "Can we go on the train, too?" one eager 8-year-old boy wanted to know, looking for the Hogwarts Express. At the station is a sign for the platform along with a trolley half in and half out of the wall. Bring your camera and photograph your children trying to run through the brick — when they can't get through tell them Dobey charmed it and you'll have to take the flying car instead.

Kid Tips

Babies: If you're a Harry Potter fan, take your baby here for a great photo op! Your baby will be happy watching the people and the trains as there's lots of commotion at King's Cross Station.

School-Age Kids: While teens might roll their eyes, school-aged children will be caught in the wonder of seeing the real station where Harry Potter took the train!

Planning Notes

  • A walk to Coram's Fields. A perfect thing to do after King's Cross Station is check out the kids' only Coram's Fields Playground, which is within walking distance.
  • Bring the camera. This is a photo op you can't miss.
  • Tricky to find. King's Cross is undergoing some construction and Platform 9 3/4 has been known to move. If you can't find it when you follow signs, ask one of the friendly train employees. You do not need to enter the station with a train ticket in order to see the platform.
  • Don't go at Rush Hour. The best time to go is during the day when the station is less crowded with harried commuters.
