Natural History Museum Description

This vast educational museum with its imposing staircases and domed ceilings has something for everyone — from Brazilian amethysts as large as a child's head and every other rock and mineral imaginable to life-sized dinosaurs that roar at you, blood dripping from their powerful jaws. Your children can learn about human evolution by seeing reconstructions of extinct early human beings, watch a short video about the use of fire, play with dozens of interactive computer displays, take a journey through the earth's crust to learn about its layers, and see hundreds of stuffed animals in the taxidermy display.

Kid Tips

Babies: This is a baby-friendly place and even though the educational component will be lost on the youngest set, your baby will be very happy spending a rainy afternoon here. Strollers can be checked at the cloakroom. Though the floors are big enough to accommodate strollers, they are not allowed on the escalators. There are unisex changing facilities throughout the museum and highchairs in the restaurants.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The walk through dinosaur exhibit, while incredible for older kids, may be too intense, dark, and scary for some toddlers.

School-Age Kids: Pick up an explorer backpack, which has binoculars and silly hats (on loan for your time at the museum) and lots of activities.

Planning Notes

  • Go when it opens. The space in the Natural History Museum is so large that even when it's really crowded you won't feel cramped but you should try to beat the school groups by getting to the museum when it opens.
  • Leave your scissors at the hotel. Bags are screened when you enter the museum and any knives or scissors may be confiscated.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Remember we told you this museum is vast? You'll be doing a lot of walking!
  • Take the Tube. The museum is walking distance from the South Kensington station.
