The Regent's Park Description
With gorgeously sculpted walkways and gardens (look for the flowers atop winged lions with horns); a spacious playground that has an enormous sandbox, a merry-go-round, a popular ice cream stand, and multileveled climbing structures; and miles of luscious lawns to sprawl on or toddle across, The Regent's Park is truly lovely. There's a children's boating lake, an open-air theater, and pedal boats to rent by the half hour. Watch unfettered herons building their nests in the park's tall trees or spend a day visiting one of the oldest zoos in the world.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Don't miss the new wildlife garden, which has a larger-than-life newt sculpture, and artwork by school children who helped create it.
Pre-Teens & Teens: If your kids have read any Sherlock Holmes, walk down to 221 Baker Street, which is less than a mile from the park, and check out the Sherlock Holmes Museum:
Planning Notes
- Tennis anyone? There's a tennis center and courts in the park, complete with family lessons. It's open daily from 9 a.m.- 9 p.m.
- Rent a boat. The pedal boats and rowboats available to rent are a popular activity for locals and a must-do for tourists with children. Older kids can paddle while younger children sit in the boat and enjoy the waterfowl and people watching.
- Take the Tube. The Regent's Park station on the Waterloo Line puts you within a few blocks of the park.
- Check the Web site for special events. Free guided bird walks and other events are offered often, some require pre-registration.
