Tower of London Description
Try on chain mail and medieval armor, walk along the high tower walls and peer at common folks below, go through darkened spiral staircases, visit the Crown Jewels on moving sidewalks in a darkened high security vault, see the tower's resident ravens that are so tame they'll hop onto the back of your bench. "It's totally awesome!" cried one 8-year-old. Your children's eyes will be wider than they've ever been as they learn and enjoy, watching weapons demonstrations, 13th-century reenactments by actors in period costumes, and storytelling where you hurry from place to place learning how to defend the tower and not be a "useless mouth." If you do one touristy thing in London, visit the Tower of London!
Kid Tips
Babies: There are baby-changing facilities in the men's and women's bathrooms in the New Armouries cafe. There is also a baby care facility in the Brick Toilets behind the Jewel House (for women only).
Toddlers & Pre-K: Children under 5 are free.
School-Age Kids: Visit the Henry VIII: Dressed to Kill exhibition in White Tower (on until Jan 17 2010) where on the top floor you'll find Hands on History, a display of interactive and fun games.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Teens will be fascinated to learn that, since 1078, there have been six kings and one queen under 16 years of age in Britain.
Planning Notes
- Go when it opens. You need to get to the Tower of London early to beat the crowds and get the most out of your day. Depending on the age of your kids, you can start with a free yeoman tour (they last about 45 minutes) to get situated or head directly to the Crown Jewels.
- Bring snacks. There are benches throughout the Tower and it's fun to watch the ravens, the tourists, and the generally medieval bustle.
- Consider buying a Historic Royal Palaces membership. A family membership (two adults and up to six children) costs £75.00 (about $111) and includes unlimited free entry to five palaces. See more details here.
- Buy tickets on-line. You'll save a few pounds if you buy your tickets on the Web.
