St James Park Description
St James Park is a lovely place to take the kids. In the heart of London, bordered by three royal palaces (Westminister, James' Palace, and Buckingham Palace), the park has wide walkways, stately trees, a plethora of birds, and several resident rather friendly pelicans! There's an imaginative playground for children at the West end, which has climbing boulders, wooden snails, a rickety bridge, a covered pint-sized picnic table, and a concession stand that sells ice cream , sandwiches, and drinks (open daily 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. depending on the weather).
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Kids will enjoy the guided walks of Duck Island, which are offered sporadically during the off season and more frequently in the summer.
Pre-Teens & Teens: St James Park is a great place to watch the changing of the guard, where you can often get closer than outside Buckingham Palace. Held on Horse Guards Parade by Whitehall, which is located just east of the park, it lasts 30 minutes and takes place daily at 11 a.m. (10 a.m. on Sundays).
Planning Notes
- Go at 2:30 p.m. They feed the pelicans daily then.
- A day in the park. Check the Web site for events in the park, many of which are free.
