Arlington National Cemetery Description
Nearly four million people visit Arlington National Cemetery each year, the resting place for 250,000 fallen military servicemen and historic figures. Presidents William Taft and John F. Kennedy are both buried here. Overlooking the grounds is the Arlington House, a 19th-century mansion that was originally built as a memorial to George Washington, before the land became a national cemetery.
Numerous monuments and memorials pay tribute to the fallen and their impact on history and the United States, including the Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial, the eternal flame at President Kennedy's gravesite, and the Tomb of the Unknowns. The Tomb is guarded 24 hours a day by sentinals from the elite 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard). You can witness the elaborate changing of the guard ceremony every hour on the hour (or every 30 minutes April-September).
