Washington Monument State Park Description
This will probably be one of the first items on your children's "Washington Wish List" -- and with good reason. With the possible exception of the Capitol and the White House, the 555-foot-tall monument is the most recognized symbol of the United States in the world. It is also one of the most visited of the national monuments, with 3,000 people each day waiting on long lines to the top.
On the weekends, you can take the 70-second elevator ride to the observation deck and then take a guided walk down; the walk lets you see the inside of the memorial and its 188 memorial stones, commemorating important people and events in 19th-century America. The long lines are worth it. There is a gift shop in the monument and a snack bar.

Planning Notes
-
Travel Advisory: Washington Monument State Park is closed for damage assessment and repair following a series of severe thunderstorms that occurred on June 4, 2008. All reservations have been cancelled, and the park will remain closed until further notice.
- Avoid the lines. Make this your first stop of the day, before the lines get too long.
- Plan for a weekend. Guided walks are not available during the week.
- Guarantee you get in. Since tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis (starting at 8:30 a.m.), you may find it more convenient to pay the small fee to reserve ahead of time, either online or by phone (877-444-6777).
