George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens Description
Originally the home of George and Martha Washington, this picturesque plantation on the Potomac River is the nation's most visted historic estate. More than 500 acres include the sprawling mansion, a working farm with lots of animals to visit, four gardens, hiking trails, and the Slave Memorial and Burial Ground. Wreathlaying ceremonies take place daily at the president and first lady's tomb. You can also visit the Donald W. Reynolds Museum to see more than 500 artifacts, and numerous galleries and theaters detailing the life of America's first president.
Planning Notes
- Visit during the holidays. Lines will be longer, but during that time you can see the usually closed-off third floor, including the presidential bedroom.
- Check out the Mill and Distillery. Three miles from the estate, you can tour Washington's water-powered mill with guides dressed in colonial attire. Separate admission fee applies.
