Discovery Creek Description
Bringing an environmentally-obsessed child to this unique museum and nature center is a must. Kids love seeing the conservation and ecology lessons they learn in school get put into action. Visitors hike to a creek to learn how water cycles from the ground to the air and back again. Teens are often impressed to find that some of the museum's volunteer staff are their age.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Buy some good-conscience souvenirs: Frog-themed $7 insulated lunch bags and $5 water bottles are useful for school back home -- and a tax-deductible gift to the museum.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Sign them up for a trip on the Rolling Rainforest. From the outside, it's a 53-foot-long tractor trailer. But inside? A tropical rainforest.
Planning Notes
- Hike, then eat. Discovery Creek, which was purchased by Living Classrooms in 2007, has two "campuses," one in D.C. proper and the other in Glen Echo, Maryland. If you head to Maryland, get picnic food at Glen Echo Pizza and Subs and spend some time in the park itself.
