Gravelly Point Park Description
Kids may wonder where the heck you're taking them -- after all, Gravelly Point Park is little more than a strip of grass on the edge of the George Washington Parkway, just outside the city in Arlington, Virginia. But watch their faces as, from just 400 yards away, planes take off and land at Ronald Reagan National Airport. You'll be close enough to read the lettering and see the landing gear at work. Combine that thrill with a tasty picnic and you've got an enjoyable afternoon.
Kid Tips
Babies: It can get pretty noisy during peak times, so if you have an easily-startled baby you may want to make your stay brief.
Pre-Teens & Teens: If you can borrow, rent, or bring your bicycles from home, tote them to Gravelly Point and take a bike ride along the biking/jogging trail.
Planning Notes
- Independence Day spot. Gravelly Point Park is a good vantage point from which to watch the famous D.C. fireworks show on the Fourth of July.
- There's more nearby. If you head north of the park on the trail, you'll find the LBJ Memorial Grove, Lady Bird Johnson Park, and a memorial to those who have died at sea.
- Got wheels? You'll need a car to get here.
