National Museum of the American Indian Description
If your kids are into fashion, take them to the Identity By Design exhibit at this museum devoted to America's native cultures. If they think that a certain brand of jeans or designer brand "says" something about them and their friends, they'll be fascinated to learn that much Native American dress connoted status and identity. But before you even browse the exhibits, have the kids watch the 13-minute movie presentation "Who We Are" in the Lelawi Theatre -- it's a great orientation to this vast collection.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Kids love the swooping architecture of the place because its curvy red sandstone walls signal that this is a different kind of museum. Inside, they like going from floor to floor via spiraling ramps, which are so much more fun than plain old stairs.
Planning Notes
- Find family fun. Stop by the welcome desk for a family guide to the museum.
- Dine in. While most museum cafeterias are just "so-so," this one draws raves for its Native American-inspired fare.
