World War II Memorial Description
The D.C. Mall is dotted with monuments, but kids seem to be especially fascinated by the memorial for veterans of World War II. They love the wide-open space, for one thing -- on a nice day, you can see kids burning off energy as they run from one side of this circular cement monument to the other. Then there's the math (yes, math) as they count the 56 pillars, one for each U.S. state and territory that sent soldiers to the conflict.

Kid Tips
Pre-Teens & Teens: Show your kids the Field of Stars. There are 400 of them, but each one represents the 400,000 who lost their lives in this epic conflict.
Planning Notes
- Night vision. If you're in the area at night, it's worth a visit: the pillars are lit separately, as is the central fountain.
