Constitution Gardens and Reflecting Pool Description
Hustle the kids out to the middle of the Constitution Gardens, then casually tell them that this whole area was once ... underwater. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged it at the turn of the last century to create a park. Now it's a peaceful oasis and the perfect launching spot to stroll past some of the monuments. Teens in particular are often as moved as their parents by the stark expanse of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Kid Tips
Pre-Teens & Teens: Cross the little wooden bridge to reach the small island in the middle of the lake. There you'll find a semicircle of granite blocks inscribed with the names of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Good time for a short talk on the bravery of men who risked their lives for freedom.
Planning Notes
- Boat out on the Basin. Weather permitting (and if you don't have a baby) go over to the nearby Tidal Basin to rent pedal boats; information at (202) 479-2426. Also, fill your bag/stroller/backpack with snacks and drinks or lunch: Although there are public restrooms you can use in this area, there are no restaurants.
- Be there for the blossoms. If you're here in late March/early April, make a point to see the Cherry Blossoms along the Tidal Basin. Go to the National Cherry Blossom site for up-to-date information.
