Tortuguero National Park Description

Few places are as eerie and otherworldly as the murky mangrove swamps of Tortuguero National Park, located in the marshy flatlands of Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Slipping through the narrow, marshy canals by flat-bottomed boat, we squealed when our guide pointed out the toothy smiles of crocodiles and caimans. Some lucky folks also spot giant tapirs, stealthy jaguars, even the almost extinct manatee. But honestly, what you're coming to see are the several species of sea turtles, incluing green sea turtles and hawksbills, and if you plan your trip so you get a chance to see turtle babies hatch and head for sea, you'll never forget it.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Some of the most exciting sights in Tortuguero are seen by boat, and babies and toddlers aren't the most boat-worthy visitors. However, you can see a great deal from the beach, as well, so families with older and younger kids could take turns baby-watching.

Planning Notes

Hire a guide. You absolutely will do best with one of the local guides trained by the National Park Service; without one you won't see nearly as much. They operate as a collective and you're supporting the local economy by hiring one of these guides.
Nesting season is the most exciting time to come, but plan ahead for permits. Only 400 people are allowed on the beach at night during nesting season, and no one is allowed on the beach after 6 p.m. without a guide, so reserve spots for your family members on an organized turtle walk well ahead of time, especially if you're only going to be in Tortuguero for a night or two.
