Horseback Riding with Finca Los Caballos Description

Just outside Montezuma is the ranch-style lodge called Finca Los Caballos. If you have horse-obsessed preteens, you can't do better than a couple days' stay here. But you don't have to stay at Finca Los Caballos to join one of their well-planned rides, which are organized by a guide for groups of just two to five people. Their horses, descended from the original horses brought to Costa Rica by the invading Spaniards, are hands-down the best treated and most fun to ride on the Nicoya peninsula. You can also arrange horseback rides on the beach in Montezuma through any of the day-trip operators in town.

Planning Notes

  • Evening rides fit with other activities. Many of the outfitters in Montezuma and other Nicoya peninsula beach towns offer evening horseback rides on the beach. This can be a great way to pack more than one activity into a day; get up early and do a boating or snorkeling activity, then break for some R& R on the beach and see the sunset on horseback at the end of the day.
  • Ride the Range. The rides at Finca Los Caballos range from two to five hours in length. The ranch does not offer a "standard" ride, but tailors each one to the interests, skill level, and adventurousness of the guests. Choose an easier ride over white sand beaches and lower terrain, or a more challenging ride negotiating narrow paths through the mountains and galloping across green meadows.
  • Horsing Around. On the Web site are photos and descriptions of each of the ranch's horses, so horse-besotted kids can begin getting to know the horses before you even board the plane. Although the horses native to Costa Rica are fairly small, these are not pony rides and are best for kids seven and up. They use comfortable western saddles, but make sure everyone's wearing long pants and closed-toe shoes, otherwise you can get skin burns from rubbing against the stirrups.
