La Paz Waterfall Gardens Description

We were skeptical when our taxi driver told us we had to see La Paz Waterfall Gardens, that it was the perfect way to spend a morning before our flight left from San Jose. We thought it might be touristy, but it was actually one of the most authentic and charming nature exhibits we saw. Here, unlike in other amphibean exhibits we saw, the frogs are let loose to hop around their enclosure, the butterflies fly free, and you can come face to face with the snakes in the serpentarium. Our best Facebook photos ended up being taken on this last day, when we had toucans landing on our arms and hummingbirds flitting around our heads.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Unlike many of the wilder, more rugged nature parks in Costa Rica, La Paz Waterfall Gardens is perfect for small kids; sort of like a tropical rainforest petting zoo.

School-Age Kids: Thrill seeking school-age kids will love the science exhibits, such as the onsite butterfly breeding lab. Where else can you see 4-inch-long butterflies emerging from tiny inch-long cocoons?

Planning Notes

  • Just reopened. Sadly, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens sustained terrible damage in the earthquake that struck Costa Rica in January 2009. The Park was closed for six months while bridges, paths, roofs, and other structures were repaired and they just reopened in June with much fanfare.
  • Make sure everyone has a warm jacket. The park is high on the slope of the Poas volcano close to 5,000 feet in altitude, so it can be chillier than you might expect.
