The Café Britt Coffee Tour Description

So you don't think the history of coffee is interesting enough to capture kids' attention? Think again when you go on the famous Café Britt tour, the original coffee plantation tour. They describe it as a "stage play on a coffee farm," but it's a lot hokier and more fun than that makes it sound. Of course, the real hit was the chocolate-covered coffee beans, and the café where they'll mix up virtually any concoction you can come up with.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Kids will like the costumes and "living history" atmosphere, while older kids will like the introduction to the "grown up" art of appreciating gourmet coffee and all the treats that go along with that.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Any teen who's addicted to Carmel Macchiatos needs to take this tour.

Planning Notes

  • Plan ahead. The original Costa Rican coffee tour, Café Britt started offering tours of their coffee plantation in 1991. This means they are very experienced, but also very popular. If your visit is during the winter high season, it's a good idea to book in advance; you can make reservations online and they will send you your complimentary bag of coffee to your home address. (A bonus, as then you don't have to carry it around Costa Rica with you.)
  • Tour options. There are two tours, the "classic," and the "coffee lovers tour." Both start at 11 a.m. each day, but the coffee lovers tour is more extensive, and includes a visit to the coffee mill and an adjoining plantation. Unless you have teens who are already coffee aficionados themselves, the classic is best for families, to prevent boredom and whining from those less interested in bean culture. The classic tour features traditionally garbed guides and a tasty lunch, so even younger kids will enjoy this "living history" adventure.
