Tortuga Island Snorkeling Description
Our first thought when we saw the white sand of Tortuga Island was that it looks like sugar. But the other thing we noticed right away is that tropical fish show up really well against the glittery white backdrop! I guess the sand — along with the clear water and bright coral reeefs — is why this tiny island is one of the most popular snorkeling and diving destinations in Costa Rica. Angel fish and other tropical beauties are only the beginning; it's quite a thrill to look down and see a manta ray, sting ray, or moray eel swimming just below your flipper-clad foot The one-day boat trips include a lunch of barbecued seafood on the beach, along with as much tropical fruit as you can eat.
Kid Tips
Pre-Teens & Teens: Kayaks are available for rent on the beach once you get to Tortuga Island, and they were a hit with my preteen and teen, who set off on their own island exploration adventure. The hike to the top of the island is strenuous, but the view takes in the whole gulf of Nicoya and is worth it.
Planning Notes
- Family first. These boat trips can be crowded and rowdy, so ask the booking agent to put you with a family-oriented group.
