Ashcroft Ghost Town Description
Experience the old Wild West in Ashcroft, a former mining town that reached its heyday in the early 1880s, and quickly went bust just a few short years later. Tour some of the miners' cabins, a couple of saloons, and even the local jail. Winter is a great time to visit -- the town offers horse-drawn sleigh rides. Break for lunch at the popular Pine Creek Cookhouse.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: They'll love the horse-drawn sleigh ride -- a thrill for you, too. It also offers a brief respite from walking around town.
School-Age Kids: Prep the kids with talk about the Old West. Get them excited about the idea of a town without people living there anymore (hence the "ghost"). It's kind of spooky and mysterious and it's a good way to get the kids interested in what, essentially, is an outdoor museum.
Planning Notes
- Watch the weather. The ghost town is 10 miles away, and while the roads are usually cleared of snow, skip it if it looks like a snowstorm is rolling in.
- Dress appropriately. The weather in the Aspen area is extremely volatile, and often very cold. Dress in layers, and make sure you're swaddled in enough of them to withstand any surprises.
