Aspen Recreation Center Description

Let's face it, Aspen is known more for its celebrity guests, truffle-saturated restaurants, and $14-dollar martini bars than kid-friendly activities, but the public Aspen Recreation Center is reason alone for families to visit this ski town. The Center offers all of the requisite gym equipment and attractions, but it also sports an NHL-sized ice rink -- another way to enjoy winter without having to strap boards to your feet. There's also a 32-foot climbing tower (where a climbing instructor monitors all kids using it). The best part? After a long day of working your legs on the mountain, you can unwind in the Center's hot tub while your kids are busy floating down the pool's lazy river or zooming down its giant spiral slide.

Kid Tips

Babies: Given the cold and the heavy swaddling your baby has had to endure during her sojourn into Aspen's winter, a dip in a warm pool may delight her.

School-Age Kids: Four words: Pool. Slide. Lazy river.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Six words: Pool. Slide. Lazy river. Hot tub.

Planning Notes

  • Child care available. The Aspen Youth Center, a drop-off daycare service available for kids between fourth and 12th grade, is within the Recreation Center. If you're planning to hit the gym for a while -- or escape into the steam room and sauna for an hour -- this is worth considering.
  • It's a beautiful building. The Center itself is a stunning structure, with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains (of course, that's not rare in Aspen). It's worth a visit even if your hotel offers a pool and gym.
  • It's between attractions. On the way to both Aspen Highlands and Maroon Bells, you might want to stop at the Center if you're planning a trip to either of those spots.
