Adventure Ridge Description

Most kids will want to spend their days in Vail skiiing or snowboarding their way down one of the most extensive networks of trails in the world. But they won't complain when you take them to Adventure Ridge for an afternoon, which is packed with entertainment for the whole family at an altitude of 10,350 feet. Learn to ride a ski-bike -- a bicycle with skis instead of wheels -- or squeeze your entire brood around an inner tube and spin down a dedicated track. Your kids will love ice skating, and the snowmobiles sized just for them. Do pay attention to the prices, though. One fee gets you an hour of tube rides down the mountain, but the fee for snowmobiles pays for only 10 minutes on the machines.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Some of the activities are beyond this age group, but the trampoline, horse-drawn sleighs, sledding, and tubing will suit most of them.

Pre-Teens & Teens: This place is made for kids this age. What's not to love about ski-bikes, snowmobiles, and tubing?

Planning Notes

  • No need to bring food. Adventure Ridge features several restaurants, so you don't need to pack food for the day.
  • Dress appropriately. At 10,350 feet elevation, the weather is volatile and cold. Prepare for a freak blizzard, or for the temperature to plunge 30 degrees in an hour.
  • Drink lots of water. At this elevation, you'll need plenty of water. Make sure you drink throughout the day, and pay attention to the kids. Altitude sickness is rarely life-threatening, but it can cause nausea and headaches -- no way to spend a day at Vail.
  • The Gore Range Nature Discovery Center. This educational center sits at the top of the gondola, and it's worth a visit. Here, you can learn about the mountains and ecosystems surrounding Vail, and learn about the class and program offerings: http://www.gorerange.org/discovery_center/index.html.
